Grovelands C P School goes solar powered

Grovelands Community Primary School in Hailsham, East Sussex is one of the first in the area to take the next step forwards in their plan to reduce their carbon emissions by going solar.

They have recently had a large 10kW solar electric array installed on their roof by local solar installation company Southern Solar Ltd.  This system will generate electricity for the school when the sun is shining, which will help to power the lights and computers used by the pupils and staff.

The system has 54 solar electric panels mounted on the roof covering around 72m2 and is connected into the school’s electrical system.  This is about five times as large as a standard domestic system and, whilst it will not provide all of their energy needs, it will have an impact on their bills and reduce the amount of C02 they produce.  The system has a display panel in the hall telling the students how much electricity it is producing and how much C02 it has saved.

Marion Lace Headteacher says: “This has been an excellent project to be involved in. Yes, it will save money on our electricity bill, but more importantly it has been an opportunity to teach the children that everyone can do things to sort out the big, serious issues, like climate change, that are facing our planet right now.  The installation by Southern Solar was done with minimum disruptionto the schooland they have supported us in obtaining funding as well as playing a part in explaining to the children what the solar panels do.

The solar panels are only part of what we are doing to be an environmentally friendly school. We run a big recycling scheme with the support of Wealden District Council, we have organic gardensand compost what waste we can. We also have plans to plant an orchard of apple trees in the spring.”
